POINT OF INTEREST

Hopi Point

Grand Canyon Village, AZ, 86023

Hopi Point is one of the most popular viewpoints along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon—and for good reason. The highest point on Hermit Road, it also extends further north into the canyon, and offers the most expansive views, from east to west, of any viewpoint along the South Rim, along with a glimpse of the Colorado River far below.

The basics

Whether you stop here as part of a guided hiking tour, a self-guided audio tour, or independently, enjoy the sweeping views of the Grand Canyon here, all the way to Havasupai Point and the Great Scenic Divide, along with the Colorado River, Hermit Rapids, the Salt Creek drainage, Horn Creek Rapids, and formations such as the Alligator and Battleship. With its unobstructed vantage point to the east and west, Hopi Point attracts lots of visitors for sunrise and sunset.

Things to know before you go

  • Hopi Point is wheelchair accessible. You can also take in views of the canyon from your windshield here.

  • Vault toilets are available at Hopi Point; it’s the only location along the red shuttle route where toilets can be found.

  • Only the outbound shuttle bus stops here during the day; inbound buses also stop here after sunset, but at the large loop to the east of the regular stop.

How to get there

Hopi Point is located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, along Hermit Road between Powell Point and Mohave Point, around 3 miles (5 kilometers) from Grand Canyon Village. Between March and November, take the Hermit’s Rest (red) shuttle route outbound (west) to Hopi Point. You can also hike 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) along the Rim Trail or ride a bike.

When to get there

Hopi Point is one of the best spots along the South Rim for watching the sunrise and sunset, and can get really crowded, especially for sunset. Get here early if you want to secure a good spot at either time. Visit in the spring or fall for smaller crowds and still pleasant weather. From December to February, you can drive your own vehicle along Hermit Road to Hopi Point.

Hiking the Rim Trail

The Rim Trail stretches for around 13 miles (21 kilometers) along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, from the South Kaibab Trailhead in the east to Hermit’s Rest in the west. Mostly flat, with accessible portions, the trail is also largely paved, aside from the section between Powell Point and Monument Creek Vista, where it’s a dirt trail. It offers a great way to visit the many lookout points along the way.
