Hopi House
Grand Canyon Village, AZ, 86023
Designed by architect Mary Colter to resemble a traditional Hopi pueblo, Hopi House has been selling authentic Native American arts and crafts for over a century. Perched on the rim of the Grand Canyon in Grand Canyon Village, the architecture reflects that of a typical Hopi dwelling, with masonry walls in red sandstone; multi-level terraced roofs; corner fireplaces and wall niches; mud-plaster walls; and ceilings made of mud-coated saplings, grasses, and twigs resting on peeled log beams.
The basics
A stop at Hopi House is a must for visitors to Grand Canyon Village interested in architecture and Indigenous American crafts. Most tours of the Grand Canyon’s South Rim stop at this dining and shopping hub, and you can browse the wares at Hopi House, take in the historic El Tovar Lodge and Grand Canyon Railway Depot, strike out along Bright Angel Trail, or hop on one of the shuttle buses to take in the national park landmarks and scenic overlooks.
Things to know before you go
Hopi House has a shop and second-floor gallery.
You can enter the building to admire the collection and architecture for free.
The building is partially accessible; the narrow front door may not accommodate all wheelchairs.
How to get there
Hopi House is located in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim. You can reach it by car via the South Entrance to Grand Canyon National Park, or arrive by train or bus. Alternatively, join a guided tour that includes transportation to the park to cover Hopi House and other highlights.
When to get there
The shop is open daily year-round, though hours may vary by season. Try to visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the bus-tour crowds that fill Grand Canyon Village and its sights during the midday hours. You can also duck in to check out the architecture and collection before or after a guided tour or hike along the South Rim.
Mary Colter buildings in Grand Canyon National Park
Architect Mary Colter designed a number of buildings inside Grand Canyon National Park while she was chief architect at the Fred Harvey Company in the early 20th century, and today they are among the most architecturally and historically important landmarks inside the park. In addition to Hopi House, you can visit Hermit’s Rest, Lookout Studio, and the Desert View Watchtower as part of a Grand Canyon guided tour or a self-guided visit to the park.
