Helsinki Zoo (Korkeasaari)
Mustikkamaanpolku 12, Helsinki, Finland, 00270
Located on Korkeasaari island, Helsinki Zoo is home to 150 animal species and more than 1,000 species of plant. Opened in 1889, the zoo is geographically divided into three sections that house bears, tigers, and lions. Today, the zoo is best known for its conservation work, particularly with endangered snow leopards.
The Basics
You can admire the zoo from afar on a canal cruise, during which you’ll escape the crowds on land and see the city from a different perspective. Benefit from discounted access to the zoo with a Helsinki Card, ideal for budget-conscious travelers. The zoo’s unique location makes it an ideal destination for a day away from the city; hop-on hop-off bus tours eliminate transport hassles while still allowing you to explore according to a flexible schedule.
Things to Know Before You Go
Helsinki Zoo is an ideal choice for families and wildlife lovers.
The zoo is wheelchair accessible, though be aware that paths are very steep in places.
Picnic facilities are available if you’d rather bring your own lunch.
A cafe, restaurant, and souvenir store offer rest stops and shopping opportunities.
The island can be a little colder and windier than the mainland, so it’s wise to wear another layer in the winter.
How to Get There
The zoo is accessible by road and via a ferry service from Helsinki Market Square in summer. Bus number 16 runs daily between Helsinki Central Station and the zoo, taking just over 20 minutes. Parking on the island is limited.
When to Get There
The park is open throughout the year, though late spring and summer are typically the most popular seasons. The zoo’s winter scenery is picturesque, though many residents stay indoors to avoid the cold. Keep an eye out for after-dark events, when visitors can glimpse nocturnal creatures.
An Alternative Island Attraction
Korkeasaari isn’t Helsinki’s only island attraction. The UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna is another Helsinki must-see, and popular amongst locals and visitors alike. The inhabited sea fortress encompasses six smaller islands, known for their natural scenery and historic landmarks. Getting there is free with a Helsinki Card.
