Golf Museum (Golfmuseum Regensburg)
Taendlergasse 3, Regensburg, Germany, 93047
Secluded in a basement in Regensburg Old Town is the city’s Golf Museum, a treasure trove of golfing artifacts. Among its 1,200 artifacts from the sport’s long history are the world’s oldest golf club and golf ball, both centuries old. Traditional golfing outfits and golf-themed artwork help set the mood in this cellar museum.
The basics
The Golf Museum of Regensburg sits down an alley around the corner from Regensburg Cathedral but is too niche to be included on most city tours. You can visit the museum in around an hour, exploring on your own or asking questions of the curator, who is sometimes present. When done, head to the nearby medieval town hall, which has its own museum, or wander the historical center's streets and squares.
Things to know before you go
You may be able to organize an out-of-hours visit to the museum by calling the museum.
Access to the museum is via a spiral staircase and is not accessible to people using wheelchairs.
You can only buy tickets to this private museum in person, and operating hours may vary.
Children are welcome in the museum, and those under 14 enter for free.
How to get there
The Golf Museum of Regensburg is located in the historical center of the city under the Antikhaus Insam shop, so walking is usually the easiest way to get there. If you are coming to the museum from outside Old Town, you can ride the A bus to the Domplatz bus stop outside the cathedral and walk the short remaining distance.
When to get there
The Regensburg Golf Museum is open every day except Sunday from mid-morning through early evening. While it is unlikely to get busy in the museum, the highest chance is from June to October, when river cruises peak. The indoor Golf Museum is an ideal activity for rainy or chilly winter days.
Other niche museums of Regensburg
While you can easily find the typical historical museums of Regensburg, why not seek out some of the city’s more niche museums similar to the Golf Museum? One that's a few streets over is the Regensburg Dachshund Museum, a museum exclusively dedicated to this breed of dog with thousands of dachshund–related objects. Document Kepler is another hyper-focused museum in the historical center, hosting exhibits about the astronomer in the house where he died.
