POINT OF INTEREST

Garrison Church

60 Lower Fort St., Millers Point, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000

Garrison Church isn’t the largest church in Sydney—nor its most popular or famous—but it's significant to the city’s military families. Established back in 1840, Garrison Church (officially known as Holy Trinity Church) was the first military church in Australia. Today, it hosts Sunday services and houses a small museum displaying early Australian military and historical items.

The basics

Because of its location next to The Rocks near downtown Sydney, Garrison Church makes an easy detour during an exploration of the city. The church was constructed using sandstone from nearby Argyle Street and features exquisite stained glass windows. The exhibit in the entryway showcases military and historical items, along with numerous plaques dedicated to Australian military groups. You can also attend services at the church.

Things to know before you go

  • The Parish of St Philip's and Garrison Church merged in 2013 and are now collectively known as the Parish of Church Hill or Church Hill Anglican.

  • Garrison Church is a nickname that was given to the church because of the many regiments that worshiped there.

  • The church is in Millers Point, a historic enclave of Sydney with 19th-century terraced houses and pubs from the 1840s.

How to get there

Garrison Church is at the intersection of Lower Fort Street and Argyle Street within walking distance of The Rocks and right next to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The city’s hop-on hop-off buses stop close by, and Circular Quay is the closest train station and ferry junction to the church.

When to get there

Sunday service is typically held at 4pm at Garrison Church; it is usually closed the rest of the week. In general, expect to encounter the biggest crowds during Sydney’s peak season, which falls between December and February. This period has the warmest weather since it is summertime in the Southern Hemisphere.

Things to do in The Rocks

As Australia’s most historic precinct, The Rocks features cobblestone streets, heritage homes, and a view of the Harbour Bridge. Browse the stalls at The Rocks Markets, explore Aboriginal history at The Rocks Discovery Museum, and wander around the Museum of Contemporary Art. You’ll also find a range of hotels, restaurants, and Australia’s oldest pubs here.
