A trip to Barcelona isn’t complete without sampling some of Catalonia’s renowned wines, and Familia Torres—Spain’s largest winery—is the perfect place to start. A sprawling vineyard that reaches across the Penedès region, the winery is owned by the Torres family, whose winemaking legacy dates back more than 140 years.

Less than an hour from Barcelona, the Torres winery makes a popular day trip for both locals and tourists, who come to sample Bodegas Torres’ world-class wine varieties and tour the winery to learn about the winemaking process. Tours take in the winery’s barrels, wine cellars, fermentation tanks, and bottling plants, along with the fascinating Torres Museum, where a multilanguage audiovisual presentation offers insight into the area’s rich wine culture. A small train takes visitors on a tour of the 5-square-mile (1,300-hectare) vineyards.
A visit to Bodegas Torres can be combined with other area wineries for a full day of tours and tastings. It’s also possible to visit the cellars as part of a day trip to nearby Montserrat Monastery or the seaside town of Sitges.

While the easiest way to reach the winery is as part of a guided tour, it’s also possible to get there using public transportation. Take the Rodalies suburban rail from Barcelona Sants or Barcelona–Plaça de Catalunya to Vilafranca del Penedès, and take a taxi the rest of the way.
