POINT OF INTEREST

China Walls

Hanapepe Pl, Honolulu, HI, 96825

Sun-seekers and surfers head to this spot along Oahu's southeastern coast for the stunning rocky shoreline and massive waves. These rugged cliffs carved by the Pacific Ocean create a wall that takes its name from the Great Wall of China. Sunbathers and picnicking families spread out their towels to enjoy a day by the water.

The basics

Tours from nearby Honolulu often head to China Walls for sunset photo shoots. While the area is known for cliff jumping, this activity should be left to strong swimmers due to the large waves and strong currents that make climbing the rocky shore difficult. Many visitors to the area bring poke and enjoy it with friends as they watch surfers offshore.

Things to know before you go

  • There is no parking lot for China Walls. Look for street parking in the nearby neighborhood.

  • There are no restroom facilities here. Pack out all of your trash.

  • Do not turn your back to the ocean. At high tide, waves can sweep people off the rocks, so always be aware of your surroundings.

  • Bring sunscreen and drinking water, as there is no shade.

  • Ocean rescues are common in this area, and no lifeguards are stationed there. Heed all posted warning signs.

How to get there

If you’re coming from Honolulu, head east on H1 Highway (turns into Highway 72) and follow directions to Koko Kai Beach Mini Park. You can also take the bus to Koko Marina Center and walk from there. Just past the mini park entrance, you will need to walk down a short, steep path to get to the rocky shore, so limit the gear you bring with you.

When to get there

The weather on Oahu lends itself to ocean days pretty much year-round. The summer months typically have the most calm ocean conditions, while the winter draws surfers to the massive waves. This area gets busy on the weekends and at sunset, so visit during the week if you prefer more space to spread out.

Other things to do nearby

Hanauma Bay State Park is just a short drive from China Walls. Snorkeling in the bay is popular, and the area gets crowded with beachgoers on the weekends. If you’re looking for a land-based activity, hike to the Hanauma Bay lookout or along the Hanauma Bay Ridge Trail—the vistas are worth the effort.
