Cheshire Military Museum
Colvin House, Grosvenor St, Chester, England
Follow the stories of Cheshire’s soldiers from Roman times to the current day at the Cheshire Military Museum. The exhibits offer a walk through time, showcasing the different conflicts around the world that have involved the Cheshire regiment. Must-see displays include a medal collection and a replica World War I trench with a periscope for a peek at “no man’s land.”
The basics
This city center museum works well for spontaneous visits, and you can buy tickets as you enter. While many Chester sightseeing tours don’t include a stop inside, it’s possible to arrange a group guided tour if you contact the museum in advance.
Otherwise, if you’re visiting independently, the museum is set out in chronological order, with plenty of written information. The museum staff is also available to help explain the exhibits and their stories.
Things to know before you go
Aim to spend a couple of hours in this niche military museum.
The museum is wheelchair accessible, though some parts of the floor may be uneven.
There are restrooms and baby-changing facilities on-site, and the museum has a small gift shop.
Photography is allowed, though you must turn off your flash before taking photos of the military uniforms.
How to get there
Take the public bus Arriva #1 from Chester city center in the direction of Wrexham, and hop off at Chester Grosvenor Street or Chester HQ, which are both within walking distance of the museum. If you’re driving, there’s paid parking nearby in the Little Roodee, New Market Place, and Chester Crown Court parking lots.
When to get there
The museum is open year-round from Thursday to Sunday, late morning until mid-afternoon. While it’s not often too busy, there are more people around on rainy days and during the UK school summer vacation break, from the end of July to early September.
Kids at the museum
Want to pique your kids' interest in Cheshire’s history? The museum offers a Children’s Adventure Trail around the site to keep all the family engaged with the exhibits. You’ll follow a route from an activity booklet, learning about the city’s military history through puzzle solving and completing challenges.
