Chaplin’s World by Grévin

Route de Fenil 2, Corsier-Sur-Vevey, Lake Geneva, 1804

Film buffs won’t want to miss Chaplin’s World by Grévin, the first museum dedicated to the life of actor Charlie Chaplin. Set in Chaplin’s neoclassical mansion in Corsier-Sur-Vevey, the museum features many of the home’s original furnishings and personal mementos, while the adjacent studio recreates sets and shows vintage movie clips.

The basics

Chaplin’s World explores the famous silent film star’s life and works in two distinct areas. The Manoir focuses on Chaplin’s life with a collection of personal effects plus more than two dozen wax figures of celebrities associated with Chaplin’s career. The Studio instead explores the actor’s Hollywood years with interactive and multimedia exhibits from model movie sets to a library of film clips and a small cinema. An expansive park surrounds both, an ideal spot for families to relax. The museum is a popular day trip from Geneva or Lausanne, but tickets must be purchased in advance to avoid a wait at the entrance.

Things to know before you go

  • Both areas of the museum have engaging multimedia exhibits for an introduction to Charlie Chaplin and his films for visitors of all ages.

  • Visitors can download the free museum app for a one-hour audio tour, additional photos, and other Chaplin-related information.

  • The museum’s large estate has panoramic views of the Alps and Lake Geneva, so plan to explore outdoors. Picnics are not allowed.

  • Chaplin’s World includes a restaurant with hot and cold dishes and a gift shop.

  • The two museum buildings are wheelchair-accessible, but the gravel path through the surrounding gardens may be challenging to navigate on wheels.

How to get there

Chaplin’s World is in Corsier-Sur-Vevey, a picturesque Swiss town about 15 miles (24 km) from Lausanne. Regular trains run from Lausanne and Geneva to the Vevey station just below the town. From there, take the 212 bus to Chaplin’s World; the stop is outside the museum entrance.

When to get there

The museum is open daily year-round, though opening hours vary depending on the season; check the website before visiting. It takes about 2.5 hours to cover the exhibits, so arrive in plenty of time before the scheduled closing. Choose to visit on a clear, mild day to enjoy the park, a highlight of Chaplin’s World.

The highlights of Lake Geneva’s northern shore

Chaplin’s World sits along the north shore of Lake Geneva, near some of the lake’s most atmospheric towns and sights. Just east of the cosmopolitan city of Lausanne lies the pretty waterfront centers of Vevey and Montreux, as well as the UNESCO-listed wine country of Lavaux and its terraced vineyards. Just beyond, the medieval Chillon Castle rises directly from the waters, marking the end of this scenic stretch of shoreline.
