POINT OF INTEREST

Casa Amatller

Passeig de Gràcia, 41, Barcelona, Catalonia, 08007

This 19th-century structure, built by Josep Puig i Cadafalch for renowned chocolatier Antoni Amatller, is a stunning modernist building featuring both Flemish and Catalan styles. The building is now a museum featuring period furniture and decorations as well as old photographs and other artifacts.

The Basics

Casa Amatller is located along a section of the commercial strip Passeig de Gràcia known as the “la mansana de la discòrdia,” or the block of discord—a hotbed of gorgeous architecture. Take a guided tour of the museum to learn about the Amatller family history and how Cadafalch incorporated their heritage into symbols embedded in the architecture. Out front, admire the combination of colors, textures, and materials used to ornament the facade.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • You have to book a guided tour to explore the house beyond the first floor.

  • Selfie sticks and tripods are not permitted.

  • To protect the floor and the decor, the following are not permitted in the house: high heels, walking sticks, crutches, backpacks, and umbrellas. The museum provides shoe coverings for everyone, and a wheelchair can be provided for those with physical disabilities. All other equipment must be left in the cloakroom on the ground floor.

  • There is an on-site chocolate shop and a cafe with healthy food options as well as hot chocolate made from Amatller’s original recipe.

  • Tours are available in English, Catalan, Spanish, and French.

How to Get There

To reach the building via public transportation, take metro lines L2, L3, or L4 to the Passeig de Gràcia station, located in Barcelona’s tourist center. The building sits adjacent Gaudí’s Casa Batlló.

When to Get There

Casa Amatller is not as well known as some of Barcelona’s other architectural wonders, so the entrance line is often shorter that at other attractions, no matter the time of day. Visit on Thursday evenings for Art Nouveau Night, when the museum hosts a special theatrical tour led by Teresa Amatller (daughter to Antoni Amatller) and her maid Justa.

Other Sights in the Eixample

The Eixample neighborhood is full of attractions. Join a walking tour or buy skip the line tickets to see as many of Antoni Gaudí’s nearby modernist masterpieces as possible in a day; highlights include La Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). You can also taste your way through the trendiest tapas bars in the district or cap off the night with a private night tour with stops at some of Barcelona’s hottest clubs.
