Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex

421 Discovery Drive, Paddys River, Australia Capital Authority, 2620

Owned by NASA and managed by CSIRO, Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex is one of three NASA tracking stations around the world. Integral to NASA missions, it’s also home to the Canberra Space Centre, where visitors can get a behind-the-scenes peek at NASA missions and learn more about the mysteries of outer space.

The basics

The Canberra Space Centre is full of interactive exhibitions chronicling the work of NASA and the ground station. Take a hands-on tour of the solar system; marvel over model spacecrafts and real artifacts taken from space-bound missions; and see a piece of the moon that dates back more than 3.8 billion years. Learn about the more than 45 NASA missions that have been tracked at the Canberra complex, including the Mars Rovers, Voyager Missions, and the Messenger mission to Mercury. Finally, enjoy views of the complex’s giant radio antennas, most impressive of which is a huge 230-foot (70-meter) satellite dish—the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.
