Boldt Castle
1 Heart Island, Alexandria Bay, NY
Built in the early 20th century, in the middle of Heart Island, Boldt Castle is one of the main tourist attractions of the Thousand Islands in the Saint Lawrence River. George Boldt began building the 120-room castle in 1900 for his wife, but it wasn’t completed until 1977, when it was opened as a local attraction.
The best way to experience Boldt Castle is on an excursion along the Saint Lawrence River, leaving from either the American or the Canadian side. Most itineraries include a scenic cruise through the Thousand Islands with a stop at the castle grounds. To see the castle from a different perspective, opt for a helicopter tour of the region; you’ll get a bird’s eye view of Boldt Castle, Singer Castle, and the Thousand Islands Bridge.
Canadian citizens are required to show photo identification upon arrival at Heart Island.
Visitors will find a cafe, a hot dog stand, and picnic tables on the grounds; outside food and drinks are welcome.
Much of the castle is accessible to wheelchairs.
You can reach Heart Island by boat from either the US or Canada, and private boats dock for free. The most convenient way to reach the site is on a guided tour.
The castle is open for self-guided tours from mid-May through mid-October; opening hours vary by month, with the longest hours in June, July, and August.
Boldt Castle has its own yacht house on nearby Wellesley Island. A free shuttle connects the yacht house to Heart Island, so after visiting the grounds, you can head over to see the imposing structure (where the Boldt family would have stored their sizable houseboat and family yachts) and the collection of antique boats that is now housed there.
A Boldt Castle tour takes as long as you'd like. The castle does not offer its own guided tours, and self-led tours are at your own pace (accompanied by the castle's dedicated app). Given the castle's scale—and the time needed to access it by water—set aside at least several hours.
No, visitors coming from the US do not need to show a passport for entry as Boldt Castle is located on Heart Island—part of the Thousand Islands region and within the United States. As it's along the US-Canada border, those coming from Canada should bring passports.
No, it is not possible to spend the night at Boldt Castle. The landmark is only open to tourists for daytime visits in season, typically May–October. However, you can stay overnight in the small town of Alexandria Bay, located just across the St. Lawrence River on US soil.
Boldt Castle is only open to visits for roughly half a year, typically from mid-May to early October. The castle hosts special events, including a Fourth of July fireworks-viewing party, and is likely to be busiest on school breaks and holiday weekends. Visit on weekdays for a calmer experience.
Yes, Boldt Castle offers visitors basic amenities, including restrooms. There is also a small concession area which sells drinks and snacks, although these cannot be consumed inside the castle. Visitors are also welcome to picnic outside, though you may not bring any alcohol to the island.
That depends on your preferences. Boldt Castle is likely to be busiest on weekends and over holidays like Labor Day and the Fourth of July. For fewer crowds, visit on weekdays. Try to time your trip for a good-weather day to make the most of the surrounding scenery.
