Bicentennial Civic Center

Rosario de Sta. Fe 650, Córdoba, Argentina

Perched on the banks of the Suquía River in Córdoba, the Bicentennial Civic Center is unmissable thanks to its unique cement-and-glass architecture. Nicknamed El Panal (The Honeycomb), the structure is a modern contrast to the historical architecture of Córdoba’s center, which dates back hundreds of years.

The basics

The Bicentennial Civic Center comprises two buildings; one is related to public administration and houses the Governor and State Attorney’s office, while the other, with an auditorium and conference room, plays host to events. The equestrian sculpture of General Juan Bautista Bustos—the first governor of Córdoba—guards the entrance of the building. The site is sometimes featured on walking tours of the city, which typically combine it with the grand Iglesia de Los Capuchinos and Córdoba’s historic center.

Things to know before you go

  • You can’t enter the building unless there’s a ticketed event or you have a meeting, but you can admire its exterior.

  • The ground surrounding the Bicentennial Civic Center is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

  • There’s a park and playground just a couple of minutes from the building.

How to get there

The Bicentennial Civic Center is located on the Suquía River banks, beside the Terminal de Ómnibus de Córdoba, where you can board long-distance buses going everywhere from Mendoza and Bariloche to Buenos Aires.

When to get there

For government matters, the center is open Monday–Friday from morning to mid-evening; it’s closed on the weekends. The structure looks particularly impressive after dark, when the lighting enhances its modernist architectural style. Check the official website to see if there are any upcoming events.

Architectural highlights of Cordoba

Now you’ve seen the modern side of Córdoba, delve into the rich history of this often-overlooked Argentine city at the Jesuit Block (Manzana Jesuítica), a 17th-century complex that’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The block is notable for its religious architecture and rural farming developments, representing a unique cultural and economic system that lasted for 150-years.
