POINT OF INTEREST

Banje Beach

20000, Ploče iza grada, Dubrovnik, Croatia

A small but charming bay just a stone’s throw from Dubrovnik’s Ploče Gate, Banje Beach offers views straight across to Lokrum Island. There’s a mix of sand, pebbles, and rocks to sunbathe on, with calm, clear blue water for a swim. Meanwhile, guests head to the Banje Beach restaurant, lounge, and club for fine Mediterranean dining by day and high-end parties by night.

The basics

Most travelers visit Banje Beach independently and, as it’s the closest beach to Dubrovnik Old Town, it can be hard to find space to sunbathe. If relaxing on sun beds (available at a fee), sipping Croatian wine, eating Mediterranean fare, enjoying a massage, or dancing the night away is not for you, you can also see the beach from the water. Many Jet Ski tours pass by here, while it’s also a popular stop on sea kayak adventures.

Things to know before you go

  • Banje Beach is a good choice for party people, kayakers, and anyone who’s tired of sightseeing and would like some sun and a swim.

  • Swimming around Dubrovnik is usually safe, but watch out for personal watercraft if you head too far away from the shore.

  • Steps, crowds, and uneven surfaces make Dubrovnik a challenging destination for travelers who rely on wheelchairs. Parents would be advised to use back carriers or slings rather than strollers.

How to get there

Banje Beach is a 3-minute walk east of Dubrovnik Old Town’s eastern Ploče Gate. Shuttle buses connect Ploče Gate with the airport and the bus station, while there are also taxis and rideshares.

When to get there

The balmiest beach weather in Dubrovnik coincides with the summer high season, when the city can get incredibly crowded, particularly when a large number of cruise ships are in town. June and September are better bets than July and August.

Banje Beach kayaking

Banje Beach is a great spot for renting sea kayaks, or joining a guided group, for an Adriatic adventure. You can paddle around the walls of Dubrovnik Old Town or head to Lokrum Island (which played Qarth in Game of Thrones) to discover a fort, a Benedictine monastery, pristine forests—and a nudist beach.
