To escape the crowds in Athens, consider taking a break at the 49-acre (20 hectare Attica Zoological Park in the suburb of Spata. This relatively new zoo, which opened in 2000 as a bird park, is home to one of the world’s largest collections of birds, as well as more than 400 species of animals.
The basics
The premier destination for wildlife education and conservation in Athens, Attica Zoological Park began with its collection of more than 1000 birds from 300 different species and gradually added reptiles; the African Savannah exhibit with elephants, zebras, giraffes, and rhinos; big cats and primates; a Somalia exhibit with camels and donkeys; and a dolphinarium. Explore its expanse of lush grounds for an up-close look at species from around the world or check out one of the educational shows featuring marine mammals, birds of prey, or elephants.
A popular way to visit the zoo is via private tour that includes round-trip transportation from Athens’ city center, entrance tickets, and an optional stop to shop at the nearby McArthurGlen Designer Outlet.

The zoo is located in At Yalou, in the Athens suburb of Spata. Take bus 319 from the city center or book a private tour that includes round-trip transportation.
When to get there
The zoo is open 365 days a year but is crowded on weekends, especially in the summer. Visit on a weekday from May through September to avoid the throngs. Keep in mind that it can be very hot during the midday hours in Athens, so arrive first thing in the morning to enjoy the zoo before temperatures soar.
