Set in the forested foothills of the Spessart Mountains along the banks of the Main River, Aschaffenburg is one of northern Bavaria’s most picturesque towns. Most travelers visit Aschaffenburg on a day tour from Frankfurt or Wurzburg. Start at the 17th-century Johannisburg Castle—behind its red sandstone façade is the National Gallery, renowned for its collection of Lucas Cranach paintings. After strolling around the palace gardens, take a walking tour of the Old Town. Lined with half-timbered buildings, arcaded walkways, and traditional wine taverns, its numerous architectural landmarks include the Neoclassical theater and sundial on Theaterplatz, and the Basilica of St. Peter and Alexander.

Aschaffenburg is located along the Main River, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Frankfurt. Direct trains run from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to Aschaffenburg and take about 30 minutes, or else it’s an about 35-minute drive.

Aschaffenburg’s woodland backdrop is even more enchanting during the spring and autumn months, when the colorful foliage is most striking and the weather ideal for hiking in the hills. The town hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year, including a folk festival in August and an atmospheric Christmas Market in front of the Johannisburg Palace.
