The basics

The Antoni Tàpies Foundation is in a building designed with all the characteristics of Modernisme architecture that Tàpies is known as a pioneer of—this style of Catalan Art Nouveau was made famous by Gaudi and evolved by Miró. The decorative townhouse is an educational facility as well as a museum, and there are art-focused exhibits plus plenty of examples of Tàpies’ abstract and creative work—including the Cloud and Chair piece that sits atop the museum itself.

How to get there

The Antoni Tàpies Foundation is very close to the Diagonal metro station. If you’re walking, you’ll find your way by heading to the Passeig de Gracia, one of Barcelona’s main central avenues, towards Casa Batló—the foundation is just across the road. You can also get the tram, the nearest stop is Barcelona-Passeig de Gracia.

When to get there

The foundation is open from Tuesday to Sunday every week, from mid-morning until early evening. Like most tourist attractions in Barcelona, the busiest times can be around opening time. Try visiting in the early afternoon during siesta time for a quieter experience, and to escape from the heat of the midday sun.

Using the Antoni Tàpies Foundation as your base, discover the school of Modernisme in Barcelona, where Catalan Modernism and Art Nouveau began. Step over the Passeig de Gracia to see Antoni Gaudi’s Casa Batlo, then head towards the Diagonal metro station to find Casa Mila too. From there, it’s just a short metro ride to the Sagrada Familia, Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece.
