POINT OF INTEREST

Adega do Cantor

Quinta do Miradouro, Albufiera, Portugal, 8200-410

While the wine cellars of Porto tend to get all of the attention when it comes to Portugal's wine scene, the Algarve boasts several award-winning vineyards. One of the best is Adega do Cantor in Guia, where rolling terraces of vines overlook the Atlantic Ocean. The vineyard combines traditional techniques with modern innovation to create unique varieties.

The basics

The winery offers 1.5-hour guided tours that cover the threshing floor and wine cellars and conclude with a tasting session in the wine store. Several Albufeira tours visit Adega do Cantor for tour and tasting and combine it with local highlights such as Salgados Lagoon, a hot spot for birdwatching, and Albufeira Old Town, with its cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings. Some experiences include tapas boards or traditional Algarvian piri piri-marinated rotisserie chicken lunch.

Things to know before you go

  • Tours cost €20 for adults and €7.50 for children over 12, whose admission does not include a tasting. Tours are in English or Portuguese.

  • If you want to skip the tour and enjoy the tasting, you can do so for €10 per adult.

  • There’s a boutique wine store on-site where you can buy a range of vintage and modern varietals.

How to get there

Most travelers visit Adega do Cantor from Albufeira, which is a 12-minute drive via the EM526-1 route. It’s also easy to reach the winery via public bus, saving you from worrying about driving after indulging. Buses 51, 14, and 57 drop you off at Algarve Shopping, which is an 8-minute walk from the winery.

When to get there

Adega do Cantor is open Monday through Friday; it’s closed on the weekends and on public holidays. It’s open from mid-morning to late afternoon but shuts for a lunch break between 1 and 2pm. You need to book your tour and tasting in advance to ensure there’s somebody there to greet you on arrival.

The best food and drink in the central Algarve

Wine isn’t the only thing Portugal’s southern Algarve region is famous for. Near constant sunshine means the area produces delicious fruit and vegetables; be sure to sample sun-drenched oranges, olives, avocados, lemons, and almonds, all of which grow on the trees of the countryside.
