Washington, D.C. is a great stop for history buffs, being chock-full of meaningful exhibits and attractions that are as educational as they are entertaining. However, it can sometimes be nice to change it up and experience a different atmosphere. Not sure where to go or what to see? To kick-start the travel planning process, we've highlighted the 6 best weekend getaways from Washington D.C.

1. Baltimore, Maryland

A short trip by commuter rail will take you from D.C.'s Union Station to the heart of Baltimore — a walkable and bustling community that feels distinct from D.C. Its accessibility makes it a good choice for a weekend getaway from Washington D.C., alongside its wide variety of things to do and see.

  • Recommended accommodation: For a memorable experience, stay in the historic Fells Point neighborhood — a lovely waterfront area that's easily explored when the upscale Sagamore Pendry Baltimore is your home base. Otherwise, you can access Baltimore's cultural gems when you stay at the Hotel Indigo Baltimore Downtown.
  • Suggested activities:
    • Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. Known for playing an instrumental role in the War of 1812, this pentagonal structure is fascinating to explore. Be sure to attend the changing of the flag — it's a meaningful event, given that the fort's defense against a British attack inspired the national anthem.
    • Baltimore Museum of Industry. Pay homage to Baltimore's industrial history at a well-designed museum, which uses immersive and highly interactive exhibits to tell the story of garment-making, steel milling and food processing as they relate to Baltimore's dynamic heritage.

2. Annapolis, Maryland

Although it's best known as the home of the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis has much more to offer, including a sprawling waterfront as well as excellent shopping and gourmet dining opportunities. Annapolis can be reached in less than an hour and is decidedly charming.

  • Recommended accommodations: Waterfront accommodations can elevate any Annapolis getaway, so a weekend stay at the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel is definitely recommended. For a delightful boutique experience, stay at the Historic Inns of Annapolis, where you'll find classic Americana styling and Victorian charm.
  • Suggested activities:
    • Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park. Learn about the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay — and the fascinating maritime history of Annapolis — at a unique museum that promises a variety of rich learning experiences. Don't forget to book a boat tour, which promises amazing views and even more maritime insights.
    • U.S. Naval Academy. Discover a stunning campus and historic institution at the famed U.S. Naval Academy. Feel free to plan a campus tour with help from the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center. Exploring on foot can be spectacular, but it's also possible to tour while riding in an electric car.

3. Ocean City, Maryland

Some of the best spots for a weekend getaway from Washington, D.C. stand out because they offer such a refreshing change of pace—and Ocean City is a prime example. This charming resort town brings out a playful, nostalgic vibe with its arcades, rides, cotton candy and much more. Whether you’re traveling with kids or just looking to reconnect with your inner child, it’s the perfect escape from everyday life.

  • Recommended accommodations: Oceanfront accommodations are essential for many, and thankfully there are plenty of excellent options available. Enjoy balcony views and a delightful poolside experience at the Hilton Ocean City Oceanfront Suites — or check out the contemporary vibes at Aloft Ocean City.
  • Suggested activities:
    • Ocean City Boardwalk. Keep it simple with a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk, offering something for everyone. In addition to snacks and souvenirs, there is plenty of street art and even live music.
    • Jolly Roger at the Pier. Cap off your boardwalk adventure with a visit to Jolly Roger at the Pier, which is well-known for its two-level carousel and its Ferris Wheel. Also essential: themed galleries at Ripley’s Believe it or Not.

4. Chincoteague, Virginia

Offering a relaxed alternative to Ocean City, Chincoteague calls for a bit more driving when your journey begins in D.C. The drive is reasonable for a weekend away, being just over three hours in length. This stunning island is perhaps best known for its wild ponies, but there's no denying the appeal of its rugged beauty, with visitors spending their time hiking and picnicking. If possible, head to Chincoteague in July for the annual Pony Swim.

  • Recommended accommodations: Discover a taste of Florida at the Key West Cottages on the Chincoteague Bay, where you'll find cheerful vibes and excellent views. Otherwise, you can depend on the Marina Bay Hotel & Suites for comfortable and budget-friendly accommodations.
  • Suggested activities:
    • Museum of Chincoteague Island. Get an insider's glimpse at the fascinating heritage of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands while you explore the small, but informative Museum of Chincoteague Island. There are plenty of interesting artifacts, but the main perk is easily the scavenger hunt, which is great for younger visitors.
    • Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Home to the eye-catching Assateague Lighthouse, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a must-visit. This expansive space is perfect for outdoorsy vacationers, who enjoy birdwatching, kayaking and strolling along the beach.

5. Williamsburg, Virginia

If you feel drawn to the historic structures of D.C. but want to step into the shoes of a colonial figure for a day, head to Williamsburg to immerse yourself in a historic neighborhood like no other. Add an extra day to your Colonial escape and explore all three corners of the iconic Historic Triangle: Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown — some of the best spots for a weekend getaway from Washington D.C.

  • Recommended accommodations: When you stay in Williamsburg, walkable accommodations are essential. A sophisticated experience can be expected when you stay at the Regency-style Williamsburg Inn, although there's something to be said for the cozy accomodations at the Williamsburg Lodge.
  • Suggested activities:
    • Colonial Williamsburg. You could easily spend your entire weekend at Colonial Williamsburg and still struggle to see it all. Meander at your own pace but be sure to check out the Capitol, the Governor's Palace and the Peyton Randolph House.
    • Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Take a break from the historic attractions and enjoy a thrill-seeking experience at one of the region's finest theme parks. Rides like the DarKoaster and the Loch Ness Monster are sure to get your heart racing, but you can also hang out with Clydesdale horses and Scottish Highland cattle.

6. Harpers Ferry

Easily one of the most underrated spots within driving distance of D.C., Harpers Ferry deserves a visit because it boasts such wonderful historic attractions — not to mention excellent hiking opportunities. It's even accessible via Amtrak's Floridian service.

  • Recommended accommodations: For convenience there’s the Quality Inn, which is just steps away from the famed Appalachian Trail. Otherwise, consider staying at The Inn At Charles Town, which although not technically in Harpers Ferry, is a short drive away and a great option if you want to hit the casino.
  • Suggested activities:
    • Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Hiking trails, living history presentations, historic buildings...this amazing attraction has it all. Highlights include the John Brown Museum, the Industry Museum and the Provost Marshal Office. For an amazing view, climb to Jefferson Rock.
    • Harpers Ferry Toy Train Museum & Joy Line Railroad. Perfect for families, this adorable museum is packed with railroad memorabilia. Better yet: take a quick ride on the miniature train, which is perfect for kids and kids at heart.
