The 11 Best Hidden Gems in Austin

Written by

AAA Travel Editor, WA

When most people picture Austin, Texas, a few top attractions come to mind: the Texas Capitol, the LBJ Presidential Library, or Zilker Park's Barton Springs Pool. Austin is also home to shopping streets, vibrant murals and is thought to have the best barbecue in Texas. If, however, you want to go beyond the expected and ditch the crowds, you'll make an extra effort to uncover lesser-known things to do in Austin.

Whether you're on the hunt for a scenic hike, a fascinating museum experience, or simply a place to keep your kids entertained, you can easily add any of these spots to your trip. Below are the 11 best hidden gems in Austin, to fit into any trip.

1. Fairy Alley

  • Address: 1507 Treadwell Street, Austin
  • Price: Free

Home to whimsical fairy houses and gardens, this little village brings magic to an otherwise ordinary neighborhood in South Austin. Step into a small alley and you'll discover a hidden world, complete with colorful murals, cozy little houses and cute figurines.

Local parents and toddlers flock to this destination, but it has yet to attract attention from most family-oriented vacationers. While this adventure may only occupy a few short minutes, the alley is absolutely worth a visit. Afterward, head around the corner to the local Alamo Drafthouse to catch a movie.

2. Warren Wildlife Gallery

  • Address: 1401 Bouldin Ave, Austin
  • Price: Free

If you crave a museum experience but want to try something other than standard fare such as the Blanton or Bullock Museums, visit the Warren Wildlife Gallery. This location is small, but impressive as this natural history attraction provides a memorable introduction to Africa's expansive plains, Asia's tallest mountains and much more. Animatronics and theatrical lighting create an immersive environment that will immerse guests of all ages. Keep in mind that taxidermy is prominently featured — if this doesn't bother you, the tour should be one-of-a-kind.

3. Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata

  • Address: 1808 Singleton Avenue, Austin
  • Price: $10

Austin's Museum of the Weird attracts a lot of attention, leading to it occasionally getting a bit crowded. If you prefer a quieter alternative that is still packed with odd artifacts, there’s the lesser-known Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata. Offering curator-led tours every Saturday, the museum features multiple impermanent collections, complete with unusual artifacts displayed within an otherwise cozy living room. It’s best to RSVP in advance so you can enjoy a highly personable museum experience in this lesser-known option that serves as a true Austin hidden gem.

4. Elisabet Ney Museum

  • Address: 304 East 44th Street, Austin
  • Price: Free

Austin has an impressive art scene, but there's far more to explore than the well-known Blanton and Mexic-Arte Museums. Paying homage to a talented sculptor, the Elisabet Ney Museum displays a vast collection of intriguing pieces within a beautiful historic home. These sculptures tell the story of Elisabet Ney and her passion for art, with most pieces created between 1850 and 1900.

Educational programs and special events frequently take place at this lovely site, which is known not only for its artistic beauty found within, but also, for its wonderfully restored prairie landscape.

5. Shoal Creek Trail

  • Address: 1380 West 34th Street, Austin
  • Price: Free

Although not exactly hidden, this trail is not nearly as busy as it should be, given its convenient access and often impressive views. Trail quality varies considerably and this may be responsible for keeping crowds to a minimum. If you stick to the northern few miles, you will find a true oasis, which despite being in the heart of the city will make you feel as if you've escaped into a secluded, natural setting. Be sure to stop and take in the beauty of Seiders Springs or enjoy some shaded relaxation beneath the nearby Seiders Oaks.

6. Blunn Creek Nature Preserve

  • Address: 1200 St Edwards Drive, Austin
  • Price: Free

If you'd like to go hiking but don't have time to leave the city, stop by the often-forgotten Blunn Creek Nature Preserve. This beautiful pocket of nature offers a rugged yet enjoyable hike that feels little like the typical urban park experience. This hike doesn't take long, but you can always extend your journey by visiting the nearby Blunn Creek Greenbelt.

7. Austin Public Library: Yarborough Branch

  • Address: 2200 Hancock Drive, Austin
  • Price: Free

Austin's expansive Central Library gets all the attention and certainly warrants a visit, but there's something to be said for the Yarborough Branch. As a converted movie theater, this branch has undergone extensive renovations to become a lovely community library. Take some time to browse the book collections or view the stunning art on display. Special events are regularly scheduled, including everything from Brazilian dance to Dungeons & Dragons.

8. Feats of Clay Pottery

  • Address: 4630 Burnet Road, Austin
  • Price: $75 per person for workshops or $225 for couples for date night

Austin's Feats of Clay has enjoyed a decent following for decades, but travelers rarely think to sign up for classes. If you want to explore your artistic side, you'll be excited to attend a workshop. If you're not interested in creating your own pottery, you can always browse the gallery. Stop by for date night, which includes two hours of pottery activities within a romantic sculpture garden — and a bottle of wine.

9. Slackers Brewing Co.

  • Address: 12233 Ranch Road 620 N #204
  • Price: $6 for beer, $8-12 for appetizers and sandwiches

The beer scene is alive and well in Austin, where top breweries tend to attract major crowds during the weekend. For a more laid-back experience, visit the tucked-away Slackers Brewing Co. for fun yet relaxing hidden gem in Austin. Offering house-made craft beer along with a few canned options and guest taps, this brewery is a must for major beer enthusiasts. A much-appreciated play area should keep kids busy while parents relax.

10. Stiles Switch BBQ

  • Address: 6610 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin
  • Price: Varies, but usually $15+

It's no secret that barbecue is a big deal in Austin, but the city's most cherished BBQ joints can attract some mighty big crowds. If you're craving barbecue but want to try something other than mainstays like Franklin Barbecue or Terry Black's, order your favorites at Stiles Switch BBQ.

11. Play Street Museum

  • Address: 5601 Brodie Lane Suite 940, Sunset Valley
  • Price: $14

If you're visiting Austin with kids and willing to drive a few minutes to nearby Sunset Valley, you will discover one of the area's most charming, family-friendly attractions: Play Street Museum. Themed spaces encourage imaginative play and are especially appealing to toddlers and preschoolers. The space is small and reservations are required, but this makes for an excellent break from Austin's better-known and often busier kid-oriented attractions.
