Western Indiana's Historic National Road Road Trip

85.7 miles: 1 hours, 56 minutes

ROUTE

Constructed between 1811 and 1834, the Historic National Road is celebrated as the nation’s first federal highway. Today you can follow the route once traveled by early settlers, stagecoaches and automobiles as it cuts across western Indiana from the capital city of Indianapolis to the Illinois state line.

The completion of the National Road in 1834 helped turn Indianapolis into the bustling metropolis it is today, but you’ll put the city in your rearview mirror as you start this drive. Once you’re past Indy’s suburban sprawl you’ll reach the small town of Plainfield, where the National Road/US 40 becomes Main Street and historic homes line the thoroughfare.

West of Plainfield the views are decidedly rural, with fields and farms dominating the landscape. A few businesses populate the small town of Stilesville. Just west of Stilesville, keep your eyes peeled for Rising Hall, an Italianate brick mansion built during the early days of the Historic National Road. It has since been restored and is now a private residence.

More landmarks await you on the National Road from Brazil to Terre Haute. Past Seelyville is an iconic billboard for Clabber Girl Baking Powder that has greeted travelers since the 1930s. Near the athletic fields at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, look for a tiny stone cottage on the roadside; it once served as a filling station for motorists on the National Road.

Your trip across the Hoosier state concludes with a small jaunt from Terre Haute to the Illinois state line. Leaving downtown Terre Haute you’ll pass the Vigo County Courthouse; the 1888 structure boasts ornate columns and a massive bell that tolls on the hour. Across the Wabash River the views are rural once again until the state line, where the National Road merges with I-70.
