Port au Choix National Historic Site is 15 kilometres (9 mi.) west of the Port Saunders-Port au Choix turnoff from Hwy. 430. In 1967 a local resident excavating for the construction of a new building discovered human bones, tools and weapons. The discovery led to archeological work that uncovered an ancient burial ground in the area. Scientific testing of the bones and artifacts disclosed that the burial ground was in use between 2300 B.C. and 1200 B.C.; it is said to be one of the largest hunter-gatherer burial grounds in North America.

NATIONAL PARKCastle Hill National Historic Site At Placentia off Hwy. 100, Castle Hill dates from the 17th century when the French selected the small fishing village of Plaisance as the base of operations for their Newfoundland and Labrador fishing fleet. The Royal Colony of Plaisance was founded at this site in 1662 during the reign of Louis XIV.

NATIONAL PARKMingan Archipelago National Park Reserve Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve (Réserve de parc national de l'Archipel-de-Mingan) consists of a group of 1,000 islands off the north shore of the St. Lawrence Gulf and is accessible by boat from Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan and Havre-St-Pierre. The archipelago, which is north of Anticosti Island (Île d'Anticosti) in the Jacques Cartier Strait, stretches about 150 kilometres (93 mi.) and was formed mostly from sedimentary rock. Erosion by the sea has resulted in spectacular rock formations; the monoliths are the most popular.
NATIONAL PARKTerra Nova National Park Seventy kilometres (45 mi.) south of Gander and 240 kilometres (150 mi.) north of St. John's on Hwy. 1, Terra Nova National Park is characterized by bold headlands extending from a rocky, mostly forested interior. Covering more than 400 square kilometres (155 sq. mi.) of the island of Newfoundland's eastern shore, the park is bounded on the south by Clode Sound, bisected by Newman Sound and touched on its northern edge by Alexander Bay.
