Thunder Basin National Grassland is in Campbell, Converse, Crook, Niobrara and Weston counties. Covering 1,800,339 acres, the national grassland was once a dust bowl. Settlers from the East, familiar only with the homesteading methods for a humid climate, met with disaster when they tried to establish farms in Wyoming's semiarid plains. Poor soil and recurrent droughts foiled attempts to cultivate the land, which soon deteriorated into dust bowls.

NATIONAL PARKAgate Fossil Beds National Monument Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is on SR 29, 22 miles south of Harrison or 34 miles north of Mitchell in the Niobrara River Valley. Imbedded in the sedimentary rock are fossils formed some 20 million years ago. NATIONAL PARKBlack Hills National Forest In the scenic Black Hills of South Dakota and extending westward into Wyoming, the Black Hills National Forest covers more than 1.2 million acres. It was established in 1897. Stands of ponderosa pine, spruce and aspen are home to mountain lions, white-tailed and mule deer, elk and turkeys.
