So why give a poor review when all other categories were excellent? We recently drove from the east coast over 900 miles with an elderly wheelchair-bound woman to stay at Hampton Inn for a four-day conference at a nearby venue. Everything was great until the last night. We were coming back from a conference day session only to find out the only elevator in the entire hotel was not working, and our elderly guest's room was on the second floor with all her luggage still there. I spoke with the front desk clerk who just started his evening shift and who was briefly informed of the elevator issue, with no plans for emergency repairs. We attended our evening conference session, and I asked the clerk first for an alternative room on the first floor - he did assign one, but someone was occupying that room. I asked the clerk to contact the elevator company to send an emergency crew to come out and repair the elevator as it was Saturday evening, and we were leaving Sunday morning. The clerk said that the elevator crew would be there on Monday. NOT GOOD. By this time, it was about 11 PM. I called another Hampton Inn about 10 miles away to book rooms for us to transfer there. Fortunately, we are going to get refunds for the lost night's stay, but we had to carry luggage from two rooms from 2nd and 3rd floors to the lobby and use the luggage cart. By the time we got to the other Hampton, it was about 1:00 AM. Think about this: If there was an emergency requiring all the guests to evacuate the building and if our elderly guest was in her room, she would have no way to leave it without the elevator. Now you understand why I gave a poor rating for safety issue which was not given highest priority. To the clerk's credit, he was willing to carry our guest to and from her room - he was about 6 feet 4 inches and built like a line-backer, so I'm sure he could have done that easily. I do not blame the clerk at all since he was trying to work with me to find a solution. Hampton Inn in Middlebury, IN needs to change their safety policy so that in the case of a building emergency, an on-call repair crew can provide same-day service so that no guests are put at risk for safety issues and consider pursuing legal recourse.

While the room was ok, the breakfast buffet left a lot to be desired. The eggs when I had them must have been sitting out for quite a while since they were dried out. The sausages were ok. Later when my wife and her sisters went down for breakfast the eggs and sausages were cold, as though they had just been taken out of a refrigerator and not heated thru. We have stayed at Hampton Inns in the past and this one did not measure up in quality to those.
