Fort Raleigh National Historic Site is on Roanoke Island, about 3 miles north of Manteo. In 1585 a group of men dispatched to Roanoke Island by Sir Walter Raleigh attempted to establish the first English colony in what is now the eastern United States. Fort Raleigh was built, but the following year the survivors returned to England.
