POINT OF INTEREST

W. E. B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture

1 Second Circular Road, Accra

The former home and final resting place of W. E. B. Du Bois—the African-American civil rights advocate and father of Pan-Africanism—Accra’s W. E. B. Du Bois Centre is open to tourists and visiting academics. Home to Du Bois’ mausoleum, it contains a small museum and lecture theater. Its serene grounds are a verdant escape from the capital’s bustle.

Although Du Bois was born in Massachusetts and lived primarily in the United States, he relocated to Ghana in his later years. His home—transformed into the center in 1985—is a landmark and attraction for history buffs and researchers. Visitors pay tribute at his mausoleum (where Du Bois and his wife, Shirley Graham Du Bois, were laid to rest) and explore the museum on guided tours. The venue’s open-air theater and seminar hall hosts speakers and events.

It's possible to visit the W. E. B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture independently. Many Accra history and culture tours stop here and often include transportation.

  • The Marcus Garvey Guesthouse, which is part of the center, is available to rent.

  • Among the center’s highlights is Du Bois’ library; to access it, you must file a request before your visit.

  • Don’t miss the chance to browse the on-site souvenir shop selling postcards, books, and other mementos.

The W. E. B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture is located at 1 Circular Road in the Cantonments neighborhood of Accra, near the United States Embassy. You can get there via taxi and rideshare services or visit as part of a tour with included transportation.

The center is open every day except Sunday, from morning until mid-late afternoon. The center recommends arriving after 10am. For the best experience, research its events calendar in advance and visit on a good-weather day so you can make the most of its setting.

W. E. B. Du Bois was known as “the Father of Pan-Africanism,” and he believed in the unification of African people along common interests and cultural intersections. Head to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park to learn more about the movement. Dedicated to Ghana’s first president, who was also an influential Pan-Africanist thinker, it offers insights into the topic.
