Swimming is not permitted at Takerkoust Lake, but water sports such as jet-skiing, wakeboarding, and kayaking are big activities here. The beautiful landscape around the lake is perfect for exploring on foot, bicycle, all-terrain vehicle, horseback, or camel. Many travelers pack a picnic lunch to enjoy near the water’s edge.

You can discover Takerkoust Lake independently, on a day tour from Marrakech, or as part of a more extensive tour that may include the main attractions of Marrakesh plus the neighboring Ourika Valley and High Atlas Mountains to visit the Setti Fatma waterfalls, the Kik Plateau, and a traditional Berber home for mint tea. Takerkoust Lake lies within the Agafay Desert, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Marrakech. Expect about a 1-hour drive down the Route d’Amizmiz; on-site parking is plentiful. You can also access the lake via shared or private taxi, which are readily available in the city. Bus 45 runs from the Marrakech medina to the lake in just over an hour.

The lake offers a nice respite from the city year-round. In the spring (mid-March through May), the surrounding mountains are abloom with colorful wheat and wildflowers. Come in the morning to avoid the crowds, especially on weekends, when city dwellers come in droves, notably in the hot summer months.

If you don’t have time to venture to the Sahara Desert while visiting Marrakech, you can still have a serene desert experience just outside the city.
