Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

300 Tower Road, Naples, FL

Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is a protected mangrove estuary and research center in Naples, Florida. The land was purchased in the 1960s to prevent further destruction to Collier County’s ecological area. Today, these untouched mangroves offer on-water exploration while the research facility provides interactive and educational events.

Rookery Bay Reserve is one of North America's last undisturbed mangrove estuaries. It is home to more than a hundred wildlife species like alligators, snakes, black bears, bobcats, and the Florida panther. Guided boat and kayak tours are available around Rookery Bay, the mangrove tunnels, and mudflats. You can also rent kayaks for self-guided exploration, although certain areas of the Rookery Bay Reserve are only accessible via guided tours.

For land-based activities, the area has three half-mile nature trails, opportunities for fishing and camping, and an observation bridge where it’s possible to see tarpon, sharks, and manatees. Inside, the Environmental Learning Center has hands-on exhibits like a 2,300-gallon aquarium, a theater that screens short ecological films, and a 180-gallon tank full of marine animals that visitors can observe and interact with. Other features include cultural and historical exhibits, a nature store, and a local art collection with pieces for sale.

  • All boat and kayak tours require prior registration.
  • Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and bottled water if you plan on exploring the estuary by trail or kayak.
  • The Estuary Encounter Touch Tank has scheduled programs, but you can engage independently with the animals.
  • One of the three half-mile trails is paved for wheelchair and stroller use.
  • The nature center has snacks for sale and picnic areas if you bring your own food.

Rookery Bay Reserve is located at 300 Tower Road, 9 miles south of downtown Naples. A private vehicle or taxi is the easiest way to reach the estuarine research reserve via US Highway 41. Bus routes 21 and 121 have a stop less than a half-mile from the site.

The Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center is only open Monday through Saturday between 9am and 4pm. Between the touch tank, the aquarium, and the other exhibits, you should allow around 2 hours for your visit. Saturdays see the most crowds, while weekdays are quieter, except for school field trips.

Although the nature center is closed on Sundays, Rookery Bay Reserve hosts a farmers market there on certain Sundays throughout the year. Local vendors fill the parking lot selling everything from seafood and cottage food to handmade jewelry and specialty coffee. You can enjoy other outdoor Rookery Bay activities after browsing the farmers market, like walking the nature trails at your leisure.
