POINT OF INTEREST

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation

5556 US-17, Brunswick, Georgia

Originally named Broadface in 1763, the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation was a working rice plantation. It was a 1,286-acre (520-hectare) segment of a 7,000-acre (2,832-hectare) plantation labored by hundreds of enslaved people who resided in more than 50 slave cabins. Today, the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Museum features antebellum antiques, heirlooms from the original family, and hiking trails.

Before the guided walk of the property, you’ll watch a film about the plantation's history, family, and enslaved people. The tour is enlightening, but don’t feel pressured to experience the museum from a purely historical point of view. Simply walking around the live oak trees, spotting the occasional osprey and bald eagle, is a relaxing way to visit this former plantation and appreciate the geographical landscape of this marsh off of the Altamaha River.

  • Leashed pets are allowed on the trails but not in the buildings.

  • A gift shop is located on the property.

  • Self-guided tours are optional.

  • Winter is the best time for bird viewing.

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation is located at 5556 Highway 17 in Brunswick, Georgia. It’s easiest to access off of Interstate 95/I-95 BUS and is right where Highway 17 intersects with the interstate. You’ll need a car to get to the plantation; a taxi or rideshare is available from the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport and surrounding cities.

The Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation is closed on Mondays and open all other days from 9am to 5pm, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Tours are offered hourly, and the final tour of each day takes place at 4pm. With nature trails, a film, the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, and picnicking spots on the property, consider an average visit of around two hours.

The Colonial Coast Birding Trail is a collection of 17 historical sites stretching from Savannah to Georgia’s state border with Florida. Over three-quarters of the bird species in Georgia have been spotted on this birding trail. Sites include ecological areas like the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge to Civil War-era sites like Fort McAllister State Park and Fort Morris State Historical Site.
