Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center is at 4500 Sioux River Rd. Displays focus on the Loess Hills of western Iowa, formed thousands of years ago by the accretion of windblown soil. China is the only other place in which deposits of this magnitude are found. Exhibits include a “walk-under” prairie with an interactive badger, natural-history dioramas, a bird egg collection and a live beehive. A discovery area lets visitors handle furs, antlers, fossils and various artifacts. An outdoor raptor enclosure has birds of prey. A playscape is available for children. Educational programs are offered. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
