Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

829 Riverside Ave, Jacksonville, Florida

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens started as the private art collection of Ninah Cummer, a local patroness of the arts. After her death, her collection of American paintings was willed to the city of Jacksonville for the cultural benefit of its people. Today, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is located on the Cummer’s former riverside property.

Casual and serious art and horticulture lovers can equally appreciate the fine collections at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. The gardens are recognized in the National Register of Historic Places. The art collections expand upon Ninah Cummer’s American art to include ancient Mediterranean, European, late medieval, and Renaissance works. Temporary exhibits fill the indoor gallery space, while the sculpture garden is the only one of the four gardens to host temporary artwork.

  • Personal photography, videography, and pencil sketching are permitted.

  • Food and drink are not allowed in the gallery; they are permitted only in the gardens.

  • The Cummer Café accepts reservations for weekly dinners.

  • The museum hosts interactive tours, events, and classes throughout the year.

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is located at 829 Riverside Avenue in Jacksonville. Free parking is available across the street; most visitors arrive by private car from the 351A or 352A exit on Interstate 95, which is two blocks from the museum. Bus route 16 stops outside of the museum.

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is closed on Mondays and operates at different hours each day. The Gardens themselves close at dusk or at the museum’s closing time, whichever comes first. Some visitors spend one to two hours exploring the museum and gardens, but a quick trip to either could last less than an hour. Weekends are busy, especially the first Saturday of each month when admission is free.

Five Points, the neighborhood that’s home to the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, is a beautiful area to spend a Saturday afternoon. The Riverside Arts Market takes place each Saturday under the I-95 overpass, one block from Cummer. The market sells local art and artisan pieces. Also nearby are Memorial Park and Riverside Park, two scenic greenspaces that are surrounded by vintage shops, hip boutiques, and a variety of restaurants.
