Braga Cathedral (Sé de Braga)

Rua Dom Paio Mendes 10, Sé, Braga, PRT

The Braga Cathedral is not only the oldest surviving church in Portugal but also a significant national monument. Constructed from the 11th through the 13th century, the cathedral inspired the architectural style of other churches and monasteries built around the same period. Modifications over centuries resulted in a blend of styles in the cathedral, including Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, and Baroque.

Discover the history and grandeur of the cathedral's multiple chapels, each constructed at different times. Pay your respects to the parents of the first Portuguese king in the Chapel of the Kings while taking in the Chapel of the Glory's striking Moorish designs and six stone lions. The late 1730s choir, with gilt wood stalls and two gilt wood organs, is also a must-see. Ensure not to overlook the Cathedral Museum, home to a 10th-century chalice, a 14th-century Virgin Mary statue, and an 11th-century Arab ivory box—each piece more stunning than the last.

  • There are different entry tickets depending on what you want to see: Cathedral, Chapels and High Choir, and Treasure Museum. Otherwise, purchase a combined ticket to visit all three areas.

  • The cathedral is closed for two hours in the middle of the day for lunch.

  • The Cathedral of Braga is located in the heart of the historic center and is easily accessible on foot.

  • There are important processions and masses held at the cathedral on special occasions, particularly at Christmas and Easter.

Ideally situated in the heart of the city, a mere 10-minute walk from the central railway station, it's easy to reach the Braga Cathedral on foot. And with Braga conveniently located just an hour from Porto by train, this is the perfect destination for a day trip. Otherwise, the city is also just a 3–4-hour train ride away from Lisbon, making it a popular weekend escape.

As with most of Portugal, the best time to visit is between the warmer months of April to October when the temperatures average around the 70s. If you prefer to avoid the summer crowds and long entrance lines, then it's recommended to visit during spring or fall. It's best to visit in the morning when it first opens up to enjoy the serenity of the incredible main hall and chapel.

Filled with a vast collection of religious art and artifacts over several rooms, the Treasure Museum is one of the cathedral's highlights. There are plenty of pieces to admire, from jewels to paintings and sculptures. One of its prized possessions is the cross used in the first mass celebrated in Brazil by Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500. It's an additional fee of a few euros to visit the museum.
