POINT OF INTEREST

Boca de Tomatlán

Jalisco

Swap the crowds of Puerto Vallarta for laidback Boca de Tomatlán, a quiet fishing village towards the south of Banderas Bay. Enjoy Boca de Tomatlán’s scenic and secluded stretch of shoreline—which is set against the picturesque backdrop of the Sierra Madre mountains—before using this coastal town as a jumping-off point to explore nearby beaches only accessible by boat.

While Boca de Tomatlán is home to one of the quieter beaches in the area, lots of wildlife, and several local restaurants serving freshly caught fish, most visitors use Boca de Tomatlán as the perfect place to begin an exploration of wider Cabo Corrientes. From the dock, grab a panga (small speedboat) to places such as Playa Las Ánimas and Yelapa or arrange a snorkeling excursion to Los Arcos. Adventure tours typically pass through Boca de Tomatlán too, often before continuing into the Sierra Madre mountains for 4X4 and zipline activities.

  • Beach lovers and bird watchers won’t want to miss Boca de Tomatlán.

  • Let someone else drive between Puerto Vallarta and Boca de Tomatlán so you can enjoy the scenery.

  • Boca de Tomatlán is a popular departure point for several beaches only accessible by boat.

  • Boca de Tomatlán is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.

Boca de Tomatlán is situated in Banderas Bay, roughly 15 miles (25 kilometers) south of Puerto Vallarta along Highway 200. Visitors typically find it most convenient to arrive by private vehicle. However, there are also buses bound for Boca de Tomatlán which depart daily from downtown Puerto Vallarta.

Boca de Tomatlán is a year-round destination in Banderas Bay, although to fully appreciate the area, it’s best to arrive early in the morning. That way, you can briefly enjoy Boca de Tomatlán before taking the boat to nearby towns and beaches.

The length of Banderas Bay—which stretches from Punta Mita, Nayarit in the north to Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco in the south—is dotted with excellent beaches. The most conveniently located for visitors in Puerto Vallarta is Los Muertos beach, although Conchas Chinas is preferred for snorkeling. Further south still and you’ll reach secluded Yelapa, accessible by boat from Boca de Tomatlán.
