POINT OF INTEREST

Bay of Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur

The Bahia de Cabo San Lucas (Bay of Cabo San Lucas) is the cape’s hub for water sports and beach activities such as jet skiing, kayaking, waterskiing, parasailing, and more. Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, the bay is lined with scenic stretches of sand and swimmable beaches, with Medano Beach being the safest and most popular in Cabo San Lucas.

There's no shortage of water-based activities here. Rent jet skis and kayaks at Medano Beach or hang out at the resorts lining the long stretch of sand overlooking the bay. Take an underwater snorkeling tour of the bay and nearby Sea of Cortez (also known as the Gulf of California) or go diving off the Chileno Beach reef or Cabo Pulmo Marine Park. There are charter boats for sports fishing—Cabo is considered the marlin capital of the world—or you can board a glass-bottom boat at sunset. For young kids, there’s also a pirate buccaneer’s cruise.

  • Medano Beach is filled with activity and thus not as tranquil as some of the other beaches.
  • You will encounter plenty of vendors selling souvenirs along Medano Beach.
  • Many beaches in Los Cabos have powerful undertows and dangerous waves, making them unsafe for swimming.

Cabo San Lucas is about a 40-minute drive from Los Cabos International Airport and San José del Cabo. There are airport shuttle services and taxis available; many of the luxury resorts will arrange transportation for guests. You can also book a transfer from the airport in advance. Cabo San Lucas Bay is located east of the marina and runs north along the coast of Cabo San Lucas. It’s easily accessible from most downtown hotels.

Plan to arrive early to beat the beach crowds and secure a spot, especially if you’re visiting during a weekend, when both locals and tourists are looking for some fun in the sun. Overall, you’ll encounter the biggest crowds during the winter months. The best time to dive and snorkel is in October and November when the waters are warm.

Located on the east coast of the Baja California peninsula, Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is about two hours by car from the Cabo San Lucas Bay area. Home to corals, colorful fish, whale sharks, dolphins, manta rays, and sea turtles, the park also contains the oldest living reef on the Pacific coast. You can snorkel and scuba dive the coral reef here.
