Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is at 409 Cathedral St. at jct. Mulberry St. Designed by architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe and overseen by America's first bishop, John Carroll, the neoclassical basilica had its cornerstone set in 1806 and its construction completed in 1821, making it the first Roman Catholic cathedral in the country. More than 20 saints and potential saints have visited the site, including St. John Neumann, St. John Paul II and St. Teresa of Calcutta; other notable visitors include President Andrew Johnson and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Eight Baltimore archbishops, including Carroll, are buried in the crypt. A museum features artifacts, documents, photographs and textiles. Twenty-four skylights illuminate the basilica's interior, which is decorated and finished with flooring and furnishings indicative of the early 19th century. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
