POINT OF INTEREST

Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art (Astrup Fearnley Museet)

Strandpromenaden 2, Oslo, NOR

Housed in a suitably futuristic complex designed by Renzo Piano, the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art (Astrup Fearnley Museet) is a privately owned gallery devoted to modern and contemporary art. Its sizable collection dates from the 1960s and features both international and Norwegian artists.

Visitors can explore the museum on a self-guided tour, and tickets include access to all of the permanent exhibits. Highlights include works by Jeff Koons (including hisMichael Jackson and Bubbles sculpture), Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer, Cindy Sherman, and Nate Lowman. The museum also hosts regular art events and temporary exhibitions.

  • There is an admission fee for the museum, but entrance is free for holders of the Oslo Pass.

  • A museum shop and café are on-site.

  • The museum is wheelchair accessible.

The museum is located in the Tjuvholmen neighborhood along Oslo’s waterfront, a 10-minute drive from downtown. Trams run to neighboring Aker Brygge, and from there it’s a scenic 10-minute walk to the museum.

The museum is open every day but Monday, year-round, and it stays open late Thursday evenings. Art enthusiasts should check out the regular Art Nights, when the museum stays open until 11pm and offers a variety of special events, tours, and temporary exhibitions.

The original Astrup Fearnley Museum opened its doors in 1993 and reopened in 2012 in a new building designed by Renzo Piano and Oslo architect Narud-Stokke-Wiig. The complex includes three buildings straddling a canal. The museum’s sail-inspired glass roof, cable-rigged columns, and silver-gray color scheme pay tribute to Oslo’s maritime heritage and the museum’s seafront location. Surrounding the museum, the Tjuvholmen Sculpture Park is another of Piano’s designs.
