For recreation, there are 11 swimming areas and 19 public parks in or around Stevens Point; lakes du Bay, Emily and Sunset are particularly popular. In winter, cross-country skiers glide along more than 36 miles of trails that lace the surrounding countryside, and downhill skiers enjoy the two nearby slopes. In summer, hiking and biking take over the trails, especially the Green Circle Trail, a 30.5-mile path linking scenic natural areas along the Wisconsin and Plover rivers.
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus offers a wealth of activities at minimal or no cost. “E Pluribus Unum,” a mosaic mural on the wall of the College of Natural Resources, depicts the university and its environs using 25 tons of tiled panels. In nearby Custer, the ReNew the Earth Institute, 7558 Deer Rd., allows visitors to explore energy efficiency and other environmental issues. Tours are offered Mon.-Fri. at 11 a.m. or by appointment for a fee; phone (715) 592-6595.
