Deer, bears and marmots are among the animals that live in the mountains surrounding the Stehekin Valley. The only town within the recreation area is remote Stehekin, whose name means “the way through” in the Chelan Indian tongue.
Park rangers lead naturalist walks and conduct a variety of educational programs. Recreational opportunities range from short day hikes to overnight camping to strenuous mountain climbing; boating and fishing are popular in Lake Chelan and nearby streams.
Several trails traverse the area; most follow the creeks that flow into the Stehekin River. A particularly spectacular site is Rainbow Falls. Raft trips, kayak tours and trail rides are offered by Stehekin Valley Ranch, 3 blocks from Stehekin Landing; phone (509) 682-4677 or (800) 536-0745.
Shuttle bus service operates from Stehekin to various trailheads late May to early October. The Golden West Visitor Center has information about camping permits, trail conditions, transportation and recreation opportunities. The center is open daily 8:30-5, late May-late Sept.; daily 10-2, late Sept. to mid-Oct.; Mon.-Fri. 12:30-2, Sat.-Sun. 10-2, early May-late May. Hours vary rest of year. Phone (360) 854-7365, ext. 14.
