NATIONAL PARK

Chickasaw National Recreation Area

A small herd of American bison in a natural setting recalls the vast herds that once roamed the territory. Campfire talks, children's programs and nature walks are summer features. Arbuckle Dam impounds the Lake of the Arbuckles at the confluence of Buckhorn, Guy Sandy and Rock creeks.

Various recreational facilities are offered at specified sites, including six campgrounds. There are several picnic areas, and other facilities are in nearby Sulphur. The 2,350-acre Lake of the Arbuckles offers swimming and boating; a safety inspection for boats is available at launch ramps. A state license is required for fishing; hunting is permitted in season.

The recreation area is split into two districts: The Lake District includes Lake of the Arbuckles, and the Platt District includes Travertine Nature Center and 67-acre Veteran's Lake. Pets are permitted but must be restricted at all times; they are not allowed in swimming areas.

Note: Due to extended periods of drought, swimming areas and boat launches may be closed when water levels are too low. Check online for current park alerts or phone (580) 622-7234 or (580) 622-3165.
