Elko

The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the country's first such festival, is a 5-day event held in late January at the Western Folklife Center, 501 Railroad St.; phone (775) 738-7508. The event helps preserve the culture of the cowboy through music, stories, tall tales, dance, poetry and exhibits of cowboy gear. During July 4th weekend, the city hosts the Elko Basque Festival, which features dancing, music, food and traditional sporting events, including weightlifting and wood chopping.

South of Elko lie the Ruby Mountains, where miles of trails lead to backcountry lakes and marshes offering hunting, fishing and boating. Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountains is known for its steep glacial walls, free-flowing streams and scenic vistas.
