DESTINATION

Fairmont

Fort Fairmont was established shortly after the start of the Dakota Conflict of 1862. A plaque near the courthouse marks the site of the fort.

Recreational facilities operate on a chain of five lakes 9 miles from the Iowa border. Channels connect four of them, and all are stocked with game fish. Fairmont is at the eastern end of the scenic portion of I-90 that runs 101 miles to the South Dakota border, and is also a halfway stopping point for travelers en route between Chicago and the Black Hills.
