Shopping

While island favorites like the Black Dog Bakery and General Store (5 Water St.) and Menemsha Blues (36 Water St.) are clustered around the Water Street ferry terminal, Vineyard Haven's main commercial area is on Main Street, between Beach Road and Drummer Lane. The short stretch shelters several women's boutiques as well as a few posh kids apparel stores.

If you're not in the market for any of the above, chat up organic coffee-sipping natives at Mocha Mott's (15 Main St.) before heading over to the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore (35 Main St.), where you'll peruse shelves lined with New York Times best sellers and thought-provoking indie reads. Or, you can browse paintings, photography and handcrafted jewelry in a handful of exhibition spaces, including Night Heron Gallery (58 Main St.), an artist-owned co-op.
