Summer presents equally diverse activities. More than 600 miles of marked hiking, biking and horseback riding trails offer challenges ranging from novice loops to back-country excursions. The ski resort features some 50 miles of trails that crisscross the mountains.
Visitors can golf at four championship courses, zoom down one of Colorado's longest alpine slides or fish in streams where President Dwight D. Eisenhower once cast a line. White-water rafting on the Colorado River and hiking in the surrounding Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests present their own fun and adventure.
A major railroad link between the east and west coasts in the early 1900s, Moffat Road was built over 11,600-foot Corona Pass in Winter Park. The Moffat Tunnel, a 6.2-mile-long railroad tunnel, replaced this route in 1927 and still is a major rail route through the Continental Divide.
