Kingston

Queen's University, on University Avenue, was founded in 1841 and is situated on 65 hectares (160 acres). The Grand Theatre, 218 Princess St., is an 820-seat facility offering concerts and theatrical productions. The theater also is home to the Kingston Symphony; phone (613) 546-4465 for theater information, (613) 546-9729 for symphony information or (613) 530-2050 for tickets.

The Loyalist Parkway, a scenic 100-kilometre (60-mi.) drive stretching along Hwy. 33 from Kingston to Trenton, passes through some 14 municipalities along the shoreline of Lake Ontario. Areas along the parkway offer opportunities for bicycling, swimming, fishing, boating and picnicking. About 40 archaeological sites and 125 historical buildings are adjacent to the highway for sightseeing.

Lake Ontario Park, on King Street, has swimming and picnic areas. Trips through the islands, excellent fishing, golfing, scuba diving and facilities for most water sports are available. Ferries, departing from Ontario Street dock, link Kingston with Wolfe Island and Cape Vincent, N.Y.

Buskers Rendezvous, held downtown, spans over four days in early July and features such entertainers as jugglers, musicians, impersonators and magicians. Buskers from around the world participate and the event draws thousands of people each year.

A farmers market operates Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, April through November, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. behind the city hall in Market Square.

The downtown area has several old limestone buildings that have been converted into specialty stores, including Cooke's Old World Shop, 61 Lower Brock St., and Cornerstone Fine Arts-Fine Crafts, 255 Ontario St.

The Cataraqui Town Centre, at 945 Gardiners Rd. near the junction of CR 38 and Hwy. 2, features Hudson's Bay and Topshop among its 141 stores.
