POINT OF INTEREST

Lover's Beach (Playa del Amor)

Baja California Sur

With white sand and jade-colored water, it’s no surprise that this postcard-ready beach has a reputation for inspiring romance. Rock formations frame the beautiful scene, and, since Mexico’s Playa del Amor faces the relatively calm waters of the Sea of Cortez, it’s ideal for snorkeling right off the shore.

A dramatic location on Land’s End means Playa del Amor can only be reached by water, and arriving in a boat adds to the beach’s castaway charm. It’s a popular stop on boat trips from Los Cabos, which range from dinner cruises to glass-bottom boat and snorkeling tours. Some outings cruise on after pausing for photos, while others drop anchor for swimming and sunbathing. If you’re cruising to Playa del Amor, look out for other landmarks along the way, including Pelican Rock and a sea lion colony.

  • Snorkeling gear, umbrellas, and beach chairs are available to rent at Playa del Amor.

  • To see undersea life without snorkeling, consider taking a glass-bottom boat tour.

  • If you’re visiting on an independent tour or by water taxi, bring water and snacks, as there are no vendors on the beach.

  • Steady boat traffic and waves mean swimming conditions aren’t always suited to children.

Tours to Playa del Amor offer ease of access, service, and gear. If you’d prefer an independent trip, hire a water taxi in the Cabo San Lucas marina or at Playa Médano; it’s a 5-minute cruise to the beach, and you can arrange a pickup time for the return trip.

Sunrise and sunset at Playa del Amor are ideal for photography, with warm light that shows the rock formations at their best. Popular sunset cruises mean this can be a busy time at the beach, but far fewer people are willing to set their alarms for pre-dawn. If you’re looking for solitude, go early.

Slip between a series of rock formations, and you can walk from Playa del Amor to Divorce Beach, which faces the Pacific Ocean on the other side of Land’s End. Swimming is risky here, due to rough water and strong currents, but it’s worth the visit to stroll along the sand, where dramatic rock formations drop away to the water’s edge.
