J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, 1 Wildlife Dr., is named for the editorial cartoonist and pioneer conservationist. The refuge encompasses more than 6,400 acres of estuary, wetlands and mangrove islands and uplands. Amenities include canoe trails, a bird-watching tower, a self-guiding wildlife drive, interpretive trails, a double-decked boardwalk and a boat ramp. A list of more than 245 bird species that can be viewed and exhibits about manatees and crocodilians are available at the “Ding” Darling Visitor and Education Center at the refuge entrance. Educational programs are offered. A tram tour of Wildlife Drive operates Saturday through Thursday. Kayak, paddleboard and boat tours and bicycle rentals also are available. Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.).
