Mount Whitney, 13 mi. w. on W. Whitney Portal Rd., rises to 14,494 feet, making it the highest mountain in the lower 48 states. The summit is 11 miles by a strenuous trail from the end of Whitney Portal Road (elevation 8,360 ft.). Wilderness permits are required year-round. Day- and overnight-use quotas are in effect May through October; November-April wilderness permits are available at the Eastern Sierra Interagency Visitor Center, at US 395 and SR 136. Camping is permitted.
