POINT OF INTEREST

National Library of Finland

Helsinki, Finland

The National Library of Finland is a cultural institution, as well as an architectural highlight of Helsinki. Established in 1640, it’s known for being one of Finland’s largest and oldest scholarly libraries, where visitors can explore rare manuscripts, maps, and a vast collection of over three million books. It also boasts impressive interiors, with its ceiling murals, marble pillars, and grand reading halls.

The basics

The National Library of Finland’s architectural grandeur and central location make it a key stop on many walking tours. Travelers interested in design can opt for architecture–themed tours, while other options include shared or private walking tours that feature a comprehensive itinerary of major city sights. For added flexibility, there are self-guided audio tours that allow you to explore at your own pace.

Things to know before you go

  • It’s prohibited to bring food and drink into the library. If you get hungry, there’s an on-site café on floor K of the Rotunda.
  • The library has free Wi-Fi available for visitors and wall sockets to charge devices in the reading rooms.
  • Wheelchair users are advised to use the inner courtyard entrance at Yliopistokatu 1, as the main entrance at Unioninkatu 36 is not wheelchair-accessible.

How to get there

The National Library of Finland is conveniently located in the heart of Helsinki and is easy to reach via public transport. The Senaatintori tram stop, served by lines 2, 4, 5, or 7, is around a 2-minute walk, while the University of Helsinki Metro Station is about a 5-minute walk away.

When to get there

The National Library of Finland is typically open on weekdays and is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. It is also often closed on public holidays, and can close early on the day prior to a holiday—check the website for a list of holiday closures. To avoid the crowds, it’s usually quietest in the morning close to opening time.

Other architectural highlights in Helsinki

Designed by C.L. Engel, the National Library of Finland stands out as an architectural gem, but Helsinki boasts many more impressive structures. Don’t miss the striking Helsinki Cathedral, also designed by Engel; Temppeliaukio Church, which is both a church and concert venue; or the modern Oodi Helsinki Library.
