Summer Car Care Tips
from AAA North Penn

Kicking off the summer driving season, AAA predicts 33 million travelers will be driving to their destinations.

But before you get on the road it is very important make sure your vehicle is prepared for the trip.

Follow this checklist to ensure a safe and stress-free trip:

✓ Get any major repairs done.

Work with a Local Repair Shop You Trust

✓ Check the glove box for all important paperwork.

Insurance card, Registration, Owner’s manual, etc.

✓ Check the Air and Wear of Your Tires including your spare.

Check the tread depth on each tire by placing a quarter upside down in the tread grooves. If the top of Washington’s head is exposed at any point, it’s time to start shopping for new tires. Also, look for uneven tire wear when checking the tread. This can be an indication of suspension, wheel balance or alignment problems that need to be addressed.

✓ Ensure Your Car Battery is Properly Charged.

Extreme temperatures break down car batteries internally and can accelerate the rate of corrosion on battery terminals, leading to insufficient electrical power and the risk of being stranded without warning.

✓ Check the coolant.

Check the coolant level when the engine is cold. If the coolant level is low, add a 50/50 solution of coolant and water to maintain the necessary antifreeze capability. The level of antifreeze protection can be checked with an inexpensive tester available at any auto parts store.

✓ Check the windshield washer fluid reservoir.

With all that driving you are bound to have some bugs and other particles land on your windshield.  Consider investing in a better fluid that also removes bugs & road grime, repels rain, and mud & soil for greater visibility.

✓ Keep Those Wipers Working.

The life of a rubber insert is typically six to 12 months depending on its exposure to heat, dirt, sunlight, acid rain, and ozone.

✓ Keep your traveler’s happy.

Pack some snacks, water, blankets, pillows and games for the kids.
